Finding relevant and accurate resources about bird ownership, health, welfare, likes, and dislikes can be challenging. To help, we’ve compiled a short list of websites from organizations that we find helpful and informative.
American Federation of Aviculture
Association of Avian Veterinarians – use this link to find an Avian Veterinarian near you.
American Board of Veterinary Practitioners
Companion Parrots Re-Homed – This organization offers classes that you can take online.
Phoenix Landing Foundation – This organization offers detailed and information-rich live online classes and lectures as well as having a large library of past classes that are accessible online.

FAQs
When I adopt a bird do they come with their cage?
Unfortunately, cages, food, and toys do not come with the bird. You must provide an appropriate size cage for the bird you are adopting, and have it set up and OK’d by a representative of For Birds Foundation before taking your adopted bird home.
Is the bird free since I’m adopting from a rescue?
Unfortunately, no, the bird is not free. Our rescue has a multifaceted mission to give neglected, abused, frightened, and homeless parrots the life they deserve. This includes providing medical treatment, proper nutrition, enrichment, love, and care. These efforts come with significant costs, and the adoption fee you pay helps cover the needs of the birds in our care. The fee for adopting the bird of your choice is substantially less than the cost of purchasing the same bird from a store or breeder.
Can I write off the price I pay for the parrot when I adopt?
To the best of our knowledge, only donations are tax-deductible. Adoption fees and product purchases from For Birds Foundation are not. However, we recommend consulting your accountant to confirm.
Do you take in wild birds as well as parrots?
No. For Birds Foundation only takes in companion Parrots. We do not take in wild birds. This is mainly due to the possibility of disease being present in the wild bird that we do not want to infect our companion parrots. If you find a wild bird in need please contact your local wildlife rescue.
Can two birds share one cage if I adopt them together?
The safest answer is no. Even if two birds get along well outside the cage, birds are naturally moody and unpredictable. They may be preening each other one moment and fighting the next. Given the potential harm they can cause with their beaks, it’s best to provide each bird with its own individual cage for sleeping and for times when they’re not out playing in the aviary or with their people.
If I adopt a parrot and then surrender it back to you sometime in the future will I get my adoption fee back?
Unfortunately, no. As a non-profit rescue, we use the adoption fee you originally paid for the bird to support our efforts in rescuing other birds by providing medical care, food, housing, a never-ending flow of enrichment toys as well as whatever else is needed to provide for the birds. We do not offer refunds, nor do we pay for birds.
