Mission and Purpose

For Birds Foundation’s mission is to bring lifesaving and life-enhancing necessities to parrots and other birds in need by providing homes, donations of goods, services, and funds to purposefully curated rescues, preserves, sanctuaries, and avian health providers. But how do we achieve this?

Our first level of help involves taking in birds in need and placing them in foster care while they are evaluated for both physical and emotional health. Often, a bird surrendered due to aggression or self-mutilation will behave completely different once in a new environment, eating a healthy diet and receiving medical care if needed. A new face and a lot of love can transform a bird on many levels.

Once any health or emotional issues are addressed and hopefully corrected, the next step is to ensure that they are adopted by a person or family that is the right fit for the bird. This determination takes into account the bird’s temperament, prior history, and the suitability of the new home. Are there other birds or pets in the home? Is it a calm or active environment? Will the new adopter be able to give the bird quality time, access to an aviary, time outside its cage, the proper diet, and enrichment toys? Can they provide the necessary medical care when needed?

To ensure potential adoptive parents understand what is involved in bringing a parrot into their home, For Birds Foundation requires that the main caregiver take a specialized avian course.

Our second level of assistance involves supporting other specifically curated rescues and sanctuaries both nationally and worldwide, that provide breed-specific education to their adopters. This helps ensure the parrots receive the correct housing, diets, and enrichment for their health and happiness. Our main assistance to these rescues and sanctuaries is funding, but only to those whose philosophies on bird health and wellness align with ours at For Birds Foundation.
